Pre-owned diamonds: reading a stone before buying it

Buying a second-hand diamond means buying a laboratory report as much as a jewel. The stone does not wear, does not tarnish and keeps its characteristics: it is the setting that ages. At equal quality, the pre-owned market therefore gives access to larger stones. Every piece shown is appraised in Saint-Tropez, and important stones come with their certificate.

Cut matters more than weight

This is the most misunderstood point on the market. A poorly proportioned 1.20 carat diamond lets light escape through the pavilion and looks lifeless, while a 1.00 carat stone with an excellent cut radiates. Before comparing two stones on their weight, compare their proportions, their symmetry and their polish: these are what decide what the eye sees.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GIA or HRD certificate?

An analysis report issued by an independent gemmological laboratory, which records the measured characteristics of the stone. It does not set a price but provides the objective basis for any valuation.

Is an antique diamond worth less than a modern diamond?

No, it follows other criteria. Antique cuts, cushion, rose or old European, have a different, softer fire, much sought after for period settings.

Do you buy back diamonds?

Yes, with or without their setting. An appraisal in the boutique allows us to measure the stone and make a firm offer.
