The panther appeared at Cartier as early as 1914 and became, under the influence of Jeanne Toussaint, the emblem of the maison. Interpreted as an articulated bracelet, a coiled ring, a pendant or a brooch, it combines gold with black lacquer, onyx, emerald or diamond to depict the animal's coat and gaze.
Panthère jewellery is among the maison's most intricately crafted pieces: the quality of a second-hand piece is judged by the sharpness of the lacquer spots, the matching of the eyes, the suppleness of the articulation and the absence of retouching to the polish. The black lacquer of the spots is sensitive to knocks and aggressive cleaning products. Gentle cleaning with lukewarm soapy water and immediate drying are sufficient. Avoid ultrasonic baths, which can loosen the lacquer and weaken the setting of small coloured stones.
On older pieces, checking the settings every two years remains the best precaution. We verify this point before each piece is offered for sale and indicate the observed condition on the jewellery listing.
